James from Mega Cat Studios came to me by asking a very simple and efficient trailer for their new upcoming game Log Jammers.
At first, I had a hard time figuring out what direction the trailer should take. There is an interesting background and every character and map has a story of their own. But it is not what interest the players in this kind of game ; not at first at least. Finally, the idea of the trailer came naturally while I was playing and recording a game session with 3 friends. A total of 4hours of gameplay I could use!
The first biggest revelation was how fast everyone picked up the gameplay. I wanted to convey the build-up of the trailer by starting with very simple mechanics and finishing with fast-cut and higher skilled plays. Interestingly, the first gameplays you see are the first games we did.
The second striking discovery was the amount of pressure and laugh in the room. The game is 1v1 based and it started to become competitive pretty fast in harmony with a playful environment. By showing very fast-paced gameplays AND simple actions, you can easily tell this game is playable for a 5years old or a competitive player.
